A look back at the great career of the King of Pop! Eleven years ago… 🙁 #RIP
Is Michael Jackson the greatest artist of all time? For 4 decades no other artist was as loved and hated as he was. Despite the controversial nature of his lifestyle, he was an outstanding artist. It was on June 25, 2009 that everything changed. The world is in mourning. I will not go back over the circumstances of his death or my article will go on for miles. But Michael Jackson is and will remain a true legend!
Born in Indiana on August 29, 1958, he is the 7th of 9 children that make up the family. A difficult childhood due to a very strict father, he could not have fun like other children of his age and spent most of the time rehearsing with his brothers.
It was in 1966 that the Jackson Five were born and started performing in clubs. It was after winning a trophy in a local contest that the band signed with Motown Records. Their first single I want you back was instantly propelled to number one in the United States.
In 1972 he began his solo career with Ben, which became an international success. It was while playing the role of a scarecrow in The Wiz that he met Diana Ross and Quincy Jones. The latter produced the first album Off the wall and the following ones, of which the first single Don’t stop ’til you get enough also became No. 1 immediately.
His second album Thriller in 1982 left his most beautiful song Billie Jean forever etched in the memory. Moreover this song will also mark history because it is from this moment that MTV starts to play clips of black artists. A revolution in this world where racism is still very present. Let’s also talk about the song Thriller and its video clip, a real innovation at the time. The clip lasts more than 14 minutes. It’s also the year he made his famous moonwalk for the first time.
During the filming of a Pepsi pub, Michael’s hair caught fire. It was at this time that he began to become addicted to painkillers.
In 1987, his third album Bad was released. Radical change of style, we find it again in the bad boy version.
His Neverland Park was created in 1988. Maybe for him, a way to escape from reality and also to take revenge on his forgotten childhood. Michaël Jackson was involved in many causes and often invited children suffering from serious illnesses to offer them a little magic in their sad daily lives.
In 1992 he released Dangerous and created his own association Heal the world which is the title of one of his songs. The video clip of the popular song Black or White is very controversial. It was at this time that people were worried because it still showed a different Michael Jackson due to the lightening of his skin. At first, people believed that he didn’t want to be black anymore. It will take about fifteen years later to finally get the answer: he has vitiligo, a disease that causes the skin to lose all pigmentation.
It was in 1993 that the trouble with the law began for Michael. He was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy. Quickly settled out of court with money, the story ends there. At least for now…
Some time later he married Elvis Presley’s daughter. But this marriage won’t last long… In the meantime, he announces that he will soon become a father. The mother he also marries is none other than his dentist’s assistant Debbie Rowe. They will have two sons and will divorce in 1999. Shortly after he announced the birth of his third child, the mother’s name still remains a mystery.
Michael Jackson’s biggest commercial success will be the single You are not alone from his album History. Despite all the hits it contains, the album was not as successful as expected.
Invincible is the last album released during his lifetime in 2001. It was a failure.
In 2003, the trouble resurfaced with more charges of sexual abuse of a minor. In total, it took three months of stress and daily pressures on the singer before he was finally found not guilty.
After keeping a low profile for a few years, it was in London in March 2009 that Michael Jackson himself announced a series of « farewell » concerts for July. Unfortunately, these concerts will never take place… 🙁
