Hello, my name is Covid-19 Coronavirus, what’s yours ?

I’m sick and tired of this amalgamation !

I’m so sick of people saying, « do you have coronavirus? » Grrrr, we’re in lockdown, but do you know it’s not always a fatal disease?

Define coronavirus

Before going any further, let’s go back to the virus itself, because there are still a lot of amalgams left. Already, today we do not have THE coronavirus To make it simple and not to enter in the explanations in order not to confuse anyone, it is as if coronavirus was a family name. A conversation between you and the virus would give :

You: Hi, my name is Martin Dupont, and your name is?

Him: Hello, my name is covid-19 and my younger brother is called coronavirus cold.

Is that clear to everyone?

Definition of Covid-19

If the first part is clear to you, we can move on to the next. Covid-19 refers to « COronavirus Disease 2019 » which simply means « coronavirus disease 2019. Yes Covid-19 is a girl. Personally I said « the » at the beginning because we say « the » coronavirus. But it’s true that if you translate (and what a translation!), it’s definitely feminine (in short, I’m not going to give you an English course!). You should also know that this disease is caused by SARS-Cov-2 (don’t worry, we’ll come to that later). Covid-19 is infectious and contagious. Symptoms are usually fever, cough, respiratory discomfort, fatigue, sore throat, loss of smell and/or taste (leading to loss of appetite), headache and diarrhea.

SARS-Cov-2

Well, now I might lose more than one in passing, but you’ll see, it’s very simple. SARS-Cov-2 is a strain of SARS-Cov, which appeared at the same time as Covid-19. SARS-Cov stands for « severe acute respiratory syndrome. » It was discovered in 2002 and caused an epidemic in as many as 29 countries between 2002 and 2004. Did I lose you? No, it’s simple, Covid-19 became infatuated with SARS-Cov-2 and got married in a hurry and this is the result…

I’ll call back for those of you who didn’t realize this disease is contagious. We can very well have it and be asymptomatic (healthy carrier) and unfortunately transmit it unknowingly to people who are less likely than us. The other topics about this virus will finally be dealt with later.

In the meantime, take care of yourself, stay safe and protect yourself and others by staying home. Containment is the only treatment we have at the moment.
